Iroquois Indian Beaded Pin Cushion c. 1950's
Featured in this lot is this Iroquois Indian Beaded "Whimsy-style" Pin Cushion, circa late 1800s to early 1900's. This type of "cross-cultural art," using native beading styles and European fabrics and designs, was created by the Iroquois and others to appeal to the busy tourist trade of the time. This pin cushion shows wonderful construction from brown and red trade cloth filled with sawdust and closed on the underside of the pin cushion. The eight-lobed pin cushion is profusely decorated with beads in raised floral designs surrounding a central raised beaded bird figure. The glass beads are hand sewn trade beads, seed beads, pony beads, in colours of chalk white, periwinkle, clear, transparent red, dark and medium transparent green, Cheyenne pink, pumpkin yellow, and brown. The condition of this pin cushion is good, with wear consistent with its age; it shows some use, fading and soiling, but also shows good overall condition. Sawdust is leaking from the back side. The measurements of this pin cushion are 7"W x 8"L x 3"H, weight 8oz.
