The piece is a hand crafted early percussion pistol made by gunsmith, Leech of Sligo, Ireland. The firearm has a .56 caliber. The pistol is from circa 1820-1830 and shows overall rare condition for its age with the lock plate and hammer having nearly all the original coloring, and excellent hand checkered deluxe wood. The piece has a swivel type steel ramrod with a round head and an octagon 4” barrel. This is a Derringer large caliber small pistol styled after the famous gunsmith, Henry Deringer. The pistol has wonderful hand etched scroll engraved hammer, floral and burst patterns on the screws, and scroll designs on the tang and trigger guard. The pistol grip has a round sterling silver inlay with no initials. Marked on the side lock plate, “LEECH” and on top of the barrel, “SLIGO”. One of the finer and earlier examples of Leech Bros. gunsmith of Sligo, Ireland. The wood has beautifully stripped grain and only slight handling wear.
