<p>It is believed the female figure in both these paintings is Empress Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, Princess of Bavaria and cousin of King Ludwig II; she was popularly known as “Sisi”. A distinguished horsewoman she was introduced to fox hunting by Lord Spencer, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1847. She subsequently paid many visits to England to pursue her equestrian interests. She was assassinated by an anarchist in Geneva in 1898.

<p>The subject of this painting is College Walk, Lurgan, leading to "Fallowfields", the house seen in the background. This house was the residence of the Johnston family, who were prominent in the local linen industry.

<p>The title of this work ought to read “THE TEMPLE AT LUTTRELLSTOWN”. The work depicts the Doric temple in the demesne of Luttrellstown Castle, Clonsilla, Co. Dublin. A smaller (10½ by 14½ inches) view of the same scene, signed and dated 1961 and formerly with the Dawson Gallery, was sold through the Cynthia O'Connor Gallery, Dublin, in December 1986 (catalogue no. 43).
