Senator Ira Harris, A Close Friend of Lincoln's, Sends His Autograph. Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page, 5.5" by 9", Senate Chamber, [Washington], February 18, 1865. In very fine condition, with a few words in pencil at bottom anent provenance. Lincoln collectors who have already put together a set of his Cabinet, may now wish, with this autograph, to compile a definitive set of his friends. New York Senator Ira Harris was among the President's "most frequent evening visitors", making him privy not only to the President's thinking, but his patronage -- so much so, Lincoln joked, that he looked underneath his bed each night to check if Senator Harris was there, seeking another favor. One favor, extended by the Lincolns to Harris' daughter Clara and her fiancée, ended tragically: both were theatre guests of the Lincolns the night of April 14th, 1865... Harris' letter, in full: "I have received your note requesting me to send you my autograph -- I take pleasure in complying with your request -- You will find the desired signature subscribed to this note..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
