General Land Office Map suite of 1848, 1850, 1852 survey maps, each about 19 x 24". The 1848 map is by D. McClelland. This map is very early in the GLO survey process, as a portion of Iowa was ceded to the USA in 1846, and more than half was still under Sioux control. Thew map shows no towns other than Ft Snelling at the top and only significant rivers in the lower eastern quarter, the rest virtually unsurveyed. The 1850 map shows only a very slight improvement in survey, this by C. H. Booth, surveyor. The 1852 map is by G. B. Sargent, surveyor. A few cities and forts have been added.
The GlO reported regularly in their text that accompanied the survey maps that they had trouble finding qualified people to work on the surveys. this becomes evident with rapidly changing surveyors as well as lack of significant improvement over time.
