Ionia, Lebedos. Circa 160-150 B.C.
Ionia, Lebedos. Circa 160-150 B.C.<p> AR tetradrachm. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet and earring of a tiny Nike figure/Filleted cornuacopiae with owl between, standing on a club; all within olive wreath. 16.39 g. Amandry (Essays Kraay-Morkholm) 10. AU58 ICG, toned; a superb specimen. Many cities in Aeolis and Ionia minted these large-flan, Hellenistic tetradrachms beginning in 190 B.C. after the Battle of Magnesia. While the reverses all depicted different types specific to the city, they were nevertheless enclosed in a large wreath, sometimes oak, sometimes laurel. From the use of the wreath, they were termed "stephanephori." We believe they were all minted at a single mint, yet honoring the many cities. Perhaps their use was primarily a ceremonial one. Of all the issues, these rare ones of Lebedos are some of the most detailed and beautiful of the entire series. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
