Ione,CA - Amador County - No Date - Store Front Photograph :
A view of 8 children and 5 adults standing outside a carpenter and plumber's shop in Ione, CA. The image measures 4 x 5 1/2", with a beige cardstock backing measuring 6 1/2 x 8 1/2". Contrast is low to medium, while focus is fair to good. "A.W. Wulser, Carpenter" can be seen on the sign on the second floor of the building, while "Dessert & Londry, Plumbers, Tel. 995" is visible in the window behind the two children on the left of the image. Several small spots are noted on the photograph, while a bend mark is visible in the upper left corner. No photographer identified. Ione is located in the Ione Valley. Probably named by Thomas Brown around 1849 after one of Edward Bulwer Lytton's heroines in The Last Days of Pompeii. Also known as "Bedbug" and "Freezeout" during the Gold Rush. While many communities in Amador County were founded on gold mining, Ione made its name as a supply center, stage and rail stop, and agricultural area (Ref: ione-ca.com).
