Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956) Pod Movie Props
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956) Prototype Pod Prop - The inspiration for the horror Sci-Fi classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956) is even more terrifying than the plot of the film itself. Based on Jack Finney's story, it was written during the storm of the most despicable period in American History, Joe McCarthy's truly insane and anti-American Witch Hunts of the late 1940's and early 1950's, which destroyed the lives of thousands of great patriots and common citizens alike. In the film's story, people suddenly find that they are being replaced by emotionalizes alien duplicates once they fall asleep. They begin as a "pod", and grow to a "human doppelganger", whose mission it is to out others and turn them also into "pod people". Daniel Manwariing (a victim of McCarthy's nightmare, as were many of the cast and crew) wrote the screenplay and the great Don Seigel directed. It starred Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter, with a remarkable supporting cast including Carolyn Jones, King Donovan, Richard Deacon, Whit Bissell, and even Sam Peckinpah who was also the dialogue coach. So strong was the message of the movie that over half a dozen remakes have been made through the years. But none have the raw power of this original, which, because of the time it was made, gave it a powerful urgency of paranoia and terror. The legendary special makeup effects and special prop maker Don Post created both the Pod's, as well as the transformation of the pod people. Great care was taken by director Seigel and Post to make both the effects, the pods, and the story itself seem as real as possible. Many versions of the pods were created until one was selected. The idea was to create something that looked almost like a real plant that one may see in their backyard sprouting up from the morning dew. This is one of the prototypes for the pods. It is so close to the final version that it may also have been actually used as one of the background pods in the film (especially because of the production's limited budget). it comes from famed Jerry Neeley's collection. Neeley was the well known film historian, writer, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of famous directors, writers and industry people would come from around the world to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic and also to visit his magnificent famous collection of classic movie memorabilia. Also included is a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neeley's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops.
