Inupiat Steatite & Ivory Sculpture by Levi Tetpon
The lot features a fine Steatite and Walrus Tusk Ivory fisherman carving from Eskimo Inupiat artist, Levi Tetpon. The sculpture shows the human shape of a winter Eskimo Inupiat fisherman done in solid steatite soapstone and accented by a Walrus Tusk carved face and tusk topped spear. The spear, which is constructed of stripped Whale Baleen shows a rawhide sinew rope tied at the top of the four point spear head and in the hand of the fisherman. The stone shows an outstanding matrix of browns, reds, tans, blacks, greens, black and more. The piece is signed at the foot, "Levi Tetpon". Very similar to the example sold by Cowan's Auctions in their 2016 American Indian Art sale. The piece measures overall 8.25"H by 4.25"W by 2.75"D.
