Intolerance/The Mother and the Law

Six Sheet (78" x 79"); Stone Litho, Backed on two separate pieces of linen
Fine- on Linen
D.W. Griffith, 1919

Poster material from this film is very scarce, and this beautiful six-sheet is believed to be the only known example of this large-format poster. It features cast members Robert Harron, Walter Long, and Miriam Cooper.

This is a charming presentation and a scarce example from the Griffith classic. The poster has been stabilized on linen, with four panels mounted to one piece of linen and the top two panels on another. The far-right center panel shows general fold wear, with several pieces missing from the woman's arm and the background. The upper separate panels display chipping, with small pieces missing from Walter Long's face. The colors remain vibrant, and the poster presents very well.

In 1919, D.W. Griffith re-purposed scenes from his 1916 film "Intolerance" to create two separate feature films to generate income for his business. "The Modern Story" became "The Mother and the Law," and "The Babylonian Story" became "The Fall of Babylon." Interestingly, Griffith had actually shot "The Mother and the Law" as a standalone feature while editing "The Birth of a Nation." Once his controversial film became a huge success, he shifted his focus to even bigger projects. "The Mother and the Law" is now available on Blu-ray and showcases outstanding performances by Mae Marsh and Robert Harron.
