Interesting mid 19th century D-guard bowie knife with wide beavertail flare to blade, brass mountings, American birds-eye walnut grip with original scabbard. The blade measures 13-7/8”, knife measures 19-1/4”overall. Blade is well made and reinforced at the ricasso measuring approx. 1-1/2” at the center of the ricasso and nearly 2” where blade flares. The blade shows some light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting, someslight sharpening at its edge. The guard and hilt show a good patina. There are two eagle heads engraved on the right side of the ferrule. There is a Bowie knife blade engraved on the back ferrule. The blade issecured by a brass nut, the birds-eye maple grip is good with a few losses and chips. The scabbard is original to the period showing an attachment loop for carry on the belt, some opening at the seams and normal aging.Though not made by a professional knife-maker, this blade has a great American appearance.
