Interesting half-stock percussion plains rifle with lock by J. Kunz of Philadelphia. Barrel marked “Stutsman Dayton” (Ohio). The gun shows German silver mounts, double set triggers, medium to heavy weight octagonbarrel, hinged German silver patchbox. Approx. .40 caliber with rifled barrel. The barrel measures slightly more than 1” across the flats of the muzzle and shows large Rocky Mountain buck horn type rear sight andsilver blade front sight. Both in their original dovetails. The rifle is in good condition and shows original brown finish on the barrel, traces of case hardening in the patina on the lock. The lock and tang arenicely engraved and the rifle shows the quality Kunz was noted for. There is some erosion and pitting around the firing areas, particularly on the bolster, otherwise metal surfaces are generally good to very good. The stock is good other than an old break and repair at the wrist which is attractive and nicely accomplished with German silver secured by small screws. There is also a similar repair at the bottom of the stock by
