Interesting early 19th Century gold Pendant formed as an anchor, inscribed to one side 'Thomas Sotheby Esq' and to the other side 'Courageaux June 1800', 1 «" long. Details regarding Thomas Sotheby Esq He became a Lieutenant on 18th October 1778, a Captain in 1783. He was captain in 1796 of the BOMBAY CASTLE which was one of Nelson's Fleet gathering near Lisbon for the battle of St Vincent. He was also Captain of the NAMUR in 1798 which was also to be one of Nelson's Fleet 2 years later. Captain Sotheby was appointed to the COURAGEAUX in 1801. Captain Sotheby progressed through the ranks and became Admiral of the Blue on 19th July 1821. The anchor was probably made as a commemorative piece or as a gift for his wife (see illustration)
