Interesting Winchester Model 1897 pump action shotgun variation, 12 gauge, solid frame, 12” barrel, blue finish, wood stocks, #WRA Co. This gun is in overall good condition showing traces of blue on the receiver mixedwith a plum brown patina and plum brown patina on the barrel with some scratches a couple small old dings from storage; overall crisp action, fair to good bore, good wood stock with some scattered wear and mars tobutt stock; replaced Winchester checkered black hard rubber butt plate; WRA Co. marked over serial number was what Winchester did for a short time (approx. 1900-1903) to guns returned to the plant for repair when theoriginal serial number had been removed or worn off; the Company did this because some retail firms were buying guns directly from other dealers or distributors and not maintaining the Winchester recommended retail pricing structure; by removing the serial number, these “price pirates” felt they could get guns repaired without Winchester knowing who the gun was originally sold to . . . the practice was ended when serial
