Interesting Winchester Model 1866 lever action SRC, .44 cal., 20” barrel, blue finish, brass receiver, wood stocks with Japanese characters stamped on the right side of the butt stock, #15063 on the inside tang of the carbine (stockand butt stock #14806). This gun is in overall very good condition showing a plum brown patina on the barrel and loading tube mixed with original blue finish, pleasing patina to brass frame, good bore, crisp action, visible barrel address andoverall very good wood stocks with scattered old mars and scratches from carry and storage and some spots of discoloration; most of the Japanese characters are readable. Accompanying the lot is a letter dated May 20, 2007 referencing thiscarbine and indicating it was found by a resident of Tombstone, Arizona years ago in a mine, wrapped in an old pair of dungarees. Also included is an article by Francis Allan, Chip Goddard & Takehito Jimbo regarding Henry rifles and WinchesterCarbines in Japan that notes “The history of the use of the Winchester Model 1866 in Japan is unclear . . .” but goes on to quote author Herbert Houze’s notation that 5,000 Model 1866 carbines were shipped to Japan in 1867.
