Interesting Ward-Burton bolt-action single shot rifle, possibly a prototype as its patent dates are different than observed on other examples; “US” marked on top of butt plate, .45-70 cal., 30” barrel, three barrelbands, sling swivels, iron cleaning rod, wood stock, no visible serial number, only other marking is on top of bolt “Burtons Pat. Dec. 20th 1859, Aug. 12th 1868” (other examples found are marked “Ward Burton Patent Dec. 20, 1859, Feb. 21, 1871” and left side of action marked with American eagle motif and “U.S. Springfield “); in overall fine condition showing considerable browned finish on barrel and traces of case colors on the receiver, fine bore, crisp action, sharp markings and overall fine wood with some scattered old slight mars from storage; no visible inspector cartouches, just a small “28” stamped on the bottom of the butt stock areaat the butt plate; an interesting piece that should be further researched as only approx. 1,000 of these guns were manufactured at the Springfield Armory basically as a trial weapon. Est.: $4,000-$8,000.
