Interesting Sharps Model 1874 Schuetzen Rifle with Documentation

Manufactured circa 1877-1878. The rifle is complete with a Sharps Rifle Company letter dated September 15, 2009. The letter states that this is one of 62 "German Pattern" Model 1874 Rifles designed and purchased by Charles Overbaugh for the New York Central Schuetzen Corps. The letter further states that the rifle was originally chambered for the .40-50 bottleneck cartridge but was rebarreled for the .38-40 Remington cartridge circa 1900-1920. A similar rifle is pictured and described on page 233 of "SHARPS FIREARMS" by Frank Sellers. The rifle has a heavy octagon barrel with a dovetail mounted globe front sight. A folding mid-range vernier stem sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has factory double set triggers. The straight grain walnut sporting stock has a cheekpiece and pistol grip and is fitted with a factory nickel plated Schuetzen buttplate. The right side of the stock is factory inlaid with a nickel silver name plate engraved "W. Twistern". The Sharps letter notes that most of the German Pattern rifles sold to the New York Central Schuetzen Club were fitted with similar nameplates. The barrel is blue and the receiver, hammer, lever, and breechblock have a color casehardened finish. The left side of the receiver is roll stamped "SHARPS RIFLE CO./PAST. APL. 6 1869." The serial number "162219" is stamped across the top of the receiver.

Very good as partially refinished. The receiver retains traces of the faded case colors and the replaced barrel has 20% of the blue finish which is mostly thinning and developing a brown patina. The barrel is drilled and tapped for telescopic sight bases. The buttplate has some scattered age spotting. The vernier rear sight is fine and retains most of the original blue finish. The stock and forearm have been refinished and are very good with a few minor handling marks, and a sliver of wood absent on right side of forearm. This is a solid example of a documented scarce Sharps Model 1874 Schuetzen Rifle.
