Interesting Model 1832 Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia short sword lacking U.S. Government markings or eagle in the pommel. According to accompanying articles (one from The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the other from WeaponWiki) from consignor, just prior to the Civil War, Horstmann produced about 100 Model 1832 Foot Artillery/Naval short swords for the southern army with a variation that is consistent with this piece: no U.S. Government markings and on one side of the brass grip, 10 dot indents: 8 in a circle in the position where the eagle is normall found and 2 indents on the lower portion of the grip. Additionally, the blade is marked with the Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia on one side butinstead of inspector initials and a date on the other side, this variation is reported to have a Solingen knights head mark (which this piece has along with the previously-mentioned dot indents). Per the articles noted above, upon learning ofthe shipment of the 100 units South, the Union threatened Horstmann with the promise of losing all government contracts if they continued that contract and consequently, no other military items were ever supplied by the company to the south.
