Interesting Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia-marked pattern 1832 short sword, approx. 27” overall with a 21-1/2” blade in overall fair to good condition showing moderate pitting and erosion to the bladewith maker marking at the hilt on one side and a knight’s head mark on the other side; the integral cross guard and grip is cast brass. This piece is unusual in that it has no visible government markings, has anarrower blade and lacks the cast eagle on the grip, instead displaying on one side of the pommel, 10 dot indents in a circle in the position where the eagle is normally found. Accompanying this lot is a copy of anarticle on “Model 1832 Foot Artillery/Naval Sword History” which states Horstmann, just prior to the Civil War, made about 100 Naval versions of the 1832 foot sword and sent them to the South for use by the southern army.Horstmann was then greatly criticized for this by the U.S. Government and no further sales took place. We have no other examples to compare this piece to and cannot authenticate it and therefore it is sold as
