Interesting Colt SAA re-furbished, possibly by the factory, Artillery Model, .45 cal., 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, Colt medallion ivory grips, #9601 (trigger guard #114542; barrel #1472/smaller stamp 635B; ejector housing #1014B; no numbers on the back strap or cylinder). This gun is in overall fine condition as restored (No “US” on frame) showing approx. 95% blue on the barrel assembly and cylinder with some holster wear and approx. 97% case colors on the frame and hammer; fine bore, crisp action and markings, beautiful yellow ivory grips that fit nicely to this gun; accompanied by a double loop tooled leather holster and cartridge belt by Heiser and a reproduction badge that was added later by the last owner for display purposes only. Documentation with this lot includes a framed 1930 letter on “Shiff, The Gunman” letterhead ( North Woodstock, New Hampshire) indicating that gun originally came from a Bill Seward (Sewell) a reported “Rough Rider”, rancher and bounty hunter who reportedly was given this gun, holster and belt by Theodore Roosevelt. An additional letter from the late Ron Ogan dated October 15, 1991, also re-states the information in the Shiff letter adding that the gun went to collector Ira W. Fish who then sold it to collector Paul Doniger. The outfit was later purchased by Gilbert Lewis and ultimately to our consignor. A copy of the Saturday Evening Post March 31, 1917 edition is included and contains an article referenced by the Shiff letter concerning “The Sheriff of Copper Sky” by Lowell Otus Reese, having as its main character Sewell. Also included are two reference books on Teddy Roosevelt which include information on Sewell and other related documentation. An interesting story and grouping of documentation that deserves further research. From the Richard Wolfe Estate. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
