Interesting 45 Star U.S. Flag With Provenance
Interesting 45 Star U.S. Flag With Provenance. A wool, machine pieced, 45 star U.S. flag circa 1896-1908 with 8-7-8-7-8-7 star arrangement in the canton, ink stamped 6' x 10' on the hoist (actual measurements 5.5' x 11'), two brass grommets on the hoist end, with numerous holes, large and small and tears at the margins. The original owner's family legend claims that this flag was carried up San Juan Hill, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War by a family member, but there is no supporting documentation for the claim. However, the last owner has provided a letter of provenance that traces the flag's history from the late 19th century until 1970. The letter reads in part: "…Just a brief note to tell you what I know about this 45 star flag. In 1970 Jim and I bought a home/business in Wharton, N.J….that was once a General Store, Castners…the 'Company Store' used by the local miners…The store closed in the 1950's…The flag was flown by store owners sometime between 1896 and 1907 when Oklahoma was admitted into statehood…"

Shipping: Large Collectibles (view shipping information)
