Three items signed by early modern figures of the arts and sciences, all of whom became embroiled in controversy over the treatment of Jesus Christ in their works, including: a limited edition hardcover of The Brook Kerith, with slipcase, numbered 152/375, signed on the colophon in ink by Irish realist George Moore and illustrator Stephen Gooden; an AQS by French philosopher and philologist Ernest Renan, in full (translated): "Every day do the good that you can in it“; and an ALS by Scottish social anthropologist and early mythographer James George Frazer, signed “J. G. Frazer,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 3.5, personal letterhead, April 19, 1917. In part: “I thank you for your kindness in sending me your notes on ‘Balder’ [a Norse god]. I was not acquainted with the interesting details you give as to the ‘Palio’ at Siena. You may be right in your suggestion as to the horse-shoeing of the poor woman, but after all it is perhaps more likely that it was merely a ruffian’s brutal jest.” In overall fine condition.
