Dating to the 4th century B.C. - and quite possibly from the massive Macedonian army of either Philip II or Alexander III (the Great) - to be worn by a military officer of some rank, this example was manufactured from a solid sheet of bronze, with twin attached hooks at one end and series of 6-eyelets at the other. Each of the attached hooks has been liberally engraved with acanthus leaf patterns, and attached to the belt with series of iron pins. As seen in the photo, there are tiny holes along the outer edges of the entire piece where it would have been sewn onto a leather sash. Approximately 34"L, intact and excellent with one almost invisible repair, a small chip to the edge of the belt and a tiny break at one end of one of the hooks. Stunning patina in shades of red, blue, green, and brown. Ex-private Luxembourg Collection. Custom mounted. A stunning and extremely rare example of Greek militaria...
