Inscribed and Signed Mickey Cohen Autobiography
Inscribed and Signed Mickey Cohen Autobiography: In My Own Words The Underworld Autobiography of Michael Mickey Cohen as told to John Peer Nugent. (New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1975), first edition, 264 pages, light-yellow paper boards with black lettering on the spine, 8vo (6.25" x 9.25"), dust jacket (in protective Mylar). Inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper "To my friends Mary Lou and Harry, with all my good wishes, and respects. Sincerely, Mickey Cohen". After flirting with a boxing career as a teenager, Cohen spent most of his life as a mob enforcer of one kind or another. His penchant for violence drew unwanted attention from the long arm of the law, yet he only served two short prison sentences for tax evasion. He was Bugsy Siegel's bodyguard for some time, and took over Siegel's gambling operation following Bugsy's murder. After a lifetime of dodging fists, lead pipes, bombs, and guns, Cohen died in his sleep in 1976, just a year after the publication of this unflinching autobiography. This copy is good, with minimal foxing and edge wear. Some staining on edges and covers. Binding somewhat loose, but overall an attractive copy. Scarce chance to get a signed copy of the book the author himself called, "a riveting, utterly authentic inside look at how a successful gangster lives, operates, thinks about himself and his work."
