Inscribed Volcanic lever action pistol, .31 cal., 3-1/2” barrel, brass frame, iron barrel assembly, wood grips, #1399. This gun is in overall very good condition showing a medium brown patina on the barrel assembly and a pleasing taffy colored patina on brass frame with inscription on the backstrap “T. HOWARD 61st. Co. D”; the bore is good, the action very good, the grips are very good with some slight wear and scattered small scratches and mars from carry and storage. Paperwork with this lot from the estate indicates this gun was previously in the collection of Oregon Governor Victor Atiyeh (1979-1987). Also included are copies of his National Archives military and pension records that in summary indicate his service in both the 44th NY State Volunteers and the 61st NY Vols; that he was present at the battles of Chancelorsville and Gettysburg; he ruptured himself while assisting in the building of a road near Snickersville Gap, Virginia and was in and out of active service until the end of the war. A really good quality small Volcanic pistol with Civil War history. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
