Inscribed Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army spur trigger revolver, .32 cal.,5” octagon barrel, blue finish, rosewood grips, #71799. Under the left grip is stamped in capital lettering “James J. R. Welch, S.F., CAL.”. This gun is in overall very good condition showing approx. 70% original blue finish, with the majority of loss on the cylinder, bore is in overall good condition, the action is crisp, the markings are sharp and the frame/barrel hinge is excellent; the grips are very good with just some scattered small nicks and mars from carry and storage. Accompanying this gun is a file with information regarding Judge James R. Welch, of the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in the late 1800s. Judge Welch was born in 1860 in Illinois and reportedly crossed the plains in a “Prairie Schooner” in 1877 and located in Boise City, Idaho. At the outbreak of Indian hostilities, he joined Captain Maxon’s Militia and participated in many battles with raiding Indians. In 1882 he arrived in San Francisco and settled in San Jose later to become involved in politics, civic affairs and the legal profession. Est.: $3,500-$4,500.
