<B>Dean F. Krakel: A Wonderful and Scarce Copy, Inscribed by the Author and Illustrated with Two Original Watercolors by David Powell, Famed Western Artist; Accompanied by Two Desirable Dust Jackets: </B></I><B><I>The Saga of Tom Horn.</B></I></B></I><B> The Story of a Cattlemen's War. With Personal Narratives, Newspaper Accounts and Official Documents and Testimonies by Dean F. Krakel.</B></I> ( Laramie, Wyoming: Powder River Publishers, 1954 ). First edition, unexpurgated version, with an excellent inscription from Krakel on the front free endpaper: “I don't believe Tom Horn Killed Willie Nickell; he should not have been hanged. His mistake was being a poor witness in his own defense. Sincerely, Dean Krakel.” Adams, <I>Guns</B></I> 1256. Adams, <I>Herd </B></I>1287: "This book was not released for some time after it was printed on account of a threatened lawsuit, until the pictures on pages 25, 27, 28, 37, and 240, and the text on pages 13 and 54 were deleted and changes tipped in. The book deals mostly with the trial of Tom Horn for the killing of Willie Nickels." Adams, <I>One-Fifty </B></I>92: "Scarce... A thorough study of the trial and execution of Tom Horn." The Steve McQueen movie <I>Tom Horn </B></I>was based on this book. This copy also boasts two very accomplished original water-color paintings signed by Dave Powell. Powell was born and raised in Montana and is the son of artist Alice Powell. Noted for his painting of western subjects, he was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America in 2004. He also writes books on western culture and serves as a prop and costume advisor to producers and directors of Hollywood westerns. The first water-color is on the front free endpaper under Krakel's inscription, and the other is on the dedication page. The three parts of the book are listed on the rear cover of the jacket: Part One: “Another Man's Beef”; Part Two: “The State of Wyoming vs. Tom Horn”; Part Three: “The Last Mile.” -(jacket) Illustrated by Mr. R.V. Hunt. Octavo (9” x 6”). 277 pp. Bibliography, Index. Illustrated with photographic plates, and several line drawings in the text used courtesy of the Denver Post (one is identified as by Moynahan, Cheyenne, Wyoming). Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt, two dust jackets. Cloth very slightly dulled, jackets with very minor rubbing around the edges, otherwise, a beautiful fine copy of this inscribed book and with two attractive examples of original western art.
