According to the included factory letter, this revolver was shipped to New York City distributors Hartley & Graham on April 12, 1880, as part of a 40 gun order. With the exception of the ivory grips, all major features are confirmed by the letter. There is a well executed engraved monogram with intertwining initials (WJS?) present on the top of the rear grip strap. Period applied coin silver front sight, with the one line Hartford address on top and acid etched "COLT D.A. 38" panel on the left side and the three-line/ three date patent markings on the frame. Properly without provisions for attaching an ejector rod. Matching serial numbers, niter blue hammer, long cylinder pin and trigger, and "SW" monogram engraved on top of the backstrap. Checkered one piece ivory grips.

Very fine, with 75% plus of the original nickel finish. Some light dings are visible on the barrel, with scratching and spotting on the frame and cylinder, scattered dings and areas of frosting. Grips are fine, with a crack through the left side, a light chip on the right toe and attractive age color and grain. Mechanically fine.
