Inscribed Colt Model 1849 percussion pocket revolver, .31 cal., 4” octagon barrel, patina finish, inscribed on butt strap “P. L. Butler”, wood grips, #125634. This gun is in overall good condition showing an even grey patina on metal surfaces with scattered light spots of erosion and pin prick pitting; all matching visible serial numbers including the wedge except the cylinder is numbered 125268 (but appears to have been with this gun for the majority of its life); good action, markings and grips that show an old addition of varnish or linseed oil, dark bore, taffy colored patina on back strap and approx. 50% original silver plate on the trigger guard. A file accompanying this lot contains information from the American Civil War Research Database on Patrick L. Butler, a Private who enlisted in the 20th Mass. Infantry, Co. “C” on Sept. 6, 1862. These same records indicate an estimated date of March 15, 1864 when Butler did not return from furlough and was reported as a deserter. Additional research on this soldier may prove interesting; battle records concerning the 20th Mass. indicate their participation in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station and Mine Run during the time Butler was with the unit. Est.: $3,000-$3,500.
