Manufactured in 1939 and subsequently engraved by Master Engraver Alvin White in 1951. This revolver features floral scroll engraving on the barrel, cylinder (except the flats), ejector housing, trigger guard area and back strap with a stippled background and front strap. There is a wide and narrow gold inlaid band around the muzzle, breech end of the barrel and around the rear of the cylinder. The back strap is inscribed "John S. du Mont". Directly behind the front sight is a buffalo's head and the top of the back strap has a buffalo skull. John Sanderson du Mont was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on October 5, 1919. As a boy he was fascinated with antique guns and began collecting at 14. With the end of WWII in 1945 he began to seriously collect and amassed a world class Colt collection which included 14 Patersons, 5 Walkers and 3 "Buntline Specials" in the original series and Colt Single Action Army revolver serial number 1. His collection also included guns once owned by Generals Sherman and Rosecrans, George Custer and Benito Juarez, Mexican Revolutionary hero. The guns belonging to Juarez, Custer and Rosecrans are pictured in "Samuel Colt Presents" the illustrated accompaniment for the 1961-'62 loan exhibition of Colt presentation percussion firearms hoisted by Wadsworth Atheneun in Hartford, Connecticut. John du Mont served as chairman of the Honorary Committee. In the 1960s he began researching and collecting Kentucky rifles and pistols and produced the book "American Powder Horns". Over the years he developed a system on now best to approach the subject of gun collecting. John du Mont had a passionate interest in the Battle at Little Big Horn and with the help of his friend John E. Parsons wrote the book "Firearms in the Custer Battle" in 1953, followed by the expanded edition in 1988 "Custer Battle Guns". He died May 9, 2005. The gun is accompanied by a letter dated Dec 3, 1992 from an individual to Alvin White describing the gun and asking if he could confirm that he engraved it. The bottom of the letter is hand written "This pistol was done for John du Mont 38 spc 356949 March 3 1951 done for him personally" signed "Alvin A White". The revolver is also accompanied with a binder containing pictured of du Mont and a typed history of du Mont. This revolver is pictured in the Seventh Edition, 1953 The Gun Digest on page 115 (not identified by serial number) and pictured, identified by serial number, 38 special, gold inlaid and engraved by A.A. White, inscribed in script on the back strap on page 256 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by R.L. Wilson. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard one line address in a panel, "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY 38 SPECIAL" on the left side and the left side of the frame is marked with the two line, three patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and right side of the grip straps under the grip panel. The frame is casehardened with blue remaining parts, polished hammer sides and fitted with smooth two piece ivory grips.
