Georgian Tea Caddy, Rare Oval shape with cross banding,
satinwood inlays and detailed rose medallion. Original key.
It does have an old repair - around the escutcheon - see where
the grain above it is vertical and wood on the side features a
sideways grain? .Andrew says it is at least 100 years old -
perhaps the key was lost and they had to pop the top. The
craftsmanship is exceptional - they have even blended the dyed
sycamore to a shade of green to closely resemble the rest of the
leaf.

The hinge is right as is the metal knob/handle on top. The
grains all match - some areas glued down when the veneers pop
with age but have not been replaced - see right below the rose
on the bottom edge. To the right of center is a seam, that's
where that little bit of veneer was re-glued.
The spots that look like water are not in the finish but actually
part of the wood. They were there when the piece was made.
This white stuff on the inside of the lid is actually silver foil -
photo reflects the flash. Originally this would have had a lead
lining that flaked off through use. Lead poisoning was not
known in the 1800s. They stopped using lead as lining in the
1890s, the foil is a Victorian replacement - a common practice
about that time as the lead would have been quite decayed by
then.
The lining on the lid is actually well preserved - unusual to find
this much of it. You can see remnants of it up the inside of the
caddy body as well. The foil on the sides ...
