Ingrid Bergman Signed Personal Letter From Paris
Ingrid Bergman Signed Personal Letter From Paris - Of course Ingrid Bergman will forever be remembered for her portrayal of Bogart’s love, Ilsa Lund in “Casablanca”, however her remarkable career spanned over fifty years, and over seventy-five films, plays and TV movies, and she received virtually every award available. Besides “Casablanca” who could forget her performances in “Spellbound”, “Gaslight”, “Notorious”, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, “Joan of Arc”, “Cactus Flower”, Murder on the Orient Express, “Autumn Sonata” and her last great performance as Golda Meir in “A Woman Called Golda”? Of course we also remember the controversy when, in 1950, at the height of her fame, she went to Italy to film “Stromboli” and fell in love with the director Roberto Rossellini. She left her husband and daughter for him which ostracized her in Hollywood for many years. But she came back strong, and regained the respect and love of the entire industry. This is an extremely rare and remarkable Ingrid Bergman collectable. It is an original letter written by Bergman, which, as she writes on the top of the page, comes from: “Paris, April 2nd, 1957”. It is written to famous actor Van Johnson and his wife Evie, thanking them for their note on winning the Oscar for Best Actress (her second of three she would win) for “Anastasia” that year. She also mentions what a wonderful time she is having in Paris (and you can almost hear Bogie echoing in the background: “We will always have Paris”), as she mentions going back to Italy to be with her husband “Roberto”, who, as she writes “will be back from India” (at the time he was making a documentary called “India: Matri Bhumi” about the horrors and human loss during the construction of the Hirakud Dam). Ingrid Bergman typed the letter, and made handwritten corrections, then signed it in pen with: “Lots of love – Ingrid”. It comes in the original Air Mail envelope with a Les Paralyses de France postmark and two French stamps. The letter comes from the private collection of Van Johnson, and includes a Letter of Provenience from his daughter Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world. Please note that a piece of the envelope (on the right side) is missing from when it was originally torn open, however the letter is in perfect condition.
