ALS from Thomas J. Axe of the 21st Indiana Infantry, Company C. Datelined ''The 4th /61 / Fort Murray Baltimore Nox,'' letter reads in part: ''...we are camped now in the suburbs of the Citty of Baltimore...there is a fourt in progress building here that is under our care. there is about one hundred and fifty men at work on it but mind we dont have to work any and I dont believe that Uncle Sam will allow his Boys to work any, where he can hire hans...they have now sixteen cannon from twenty four pounders to eighty four pounders some of them ready for action, I don't think that we will nead it in this war, but it will help our nation a hundred years hence...it is given up by the Citizens here that we are the best drilled Company about Baltimore, our Governor thats Gov. Morton, was to see us a few days ago while on his way to Washington Citty, he made us a short but very flattering speech he said that he was going to try to get us away from here to where we could do some fighting...to honor the state of Indiana. he talked like he knowed that we wanted to go foreward to meet the enemy, I believe that our Regiment is as ready as any Regiment in the field...it is very likely that we will leave soon...'' Thomas J. Axe mustered into Company C on 24 July 1861 and was discharged on 21 September 1862. The 21st Indiana changed designation to the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery in February 1863, and saw action at Baton Rouge, Port Hudson, Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. Ink letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Verso of second leaf has list of commissioned officers of the 21st Indiana Infantry. Scattered light foxing and soiling, otherwise excellent condition.
