Indiana 118th Infantry Autograph Letters Civil War IDs
Two post Civil War letters concerning the pension of John Tuttle of the 118th Indiana Infantry, Company B. First letter is to Tuttle from his Company's Lieutenant, Jas A. Porter. Written in ink and datelined ''Sterling Kans Janny 13, 1889,'' letter reads in part: ''...the Walkers Ford battle was Dec 2, 1863 ... and the wading through the icy nature gave me as well as any others the Rheumatism...If you remember we laid at Walkers Ford for several days after the fight and our Co was on picket at the upper Ford ... That while laying at this camp my...ankles swelled...also after wards at Monroe Gap or as we used to call it Starvation Hollow...I have Col Elliot and Dr. Beouts affidavits same as your and John B., Shermans...all making almost the same statement word for word. Those letters are sent out to see if you will make the same statement twice. So you may not hesitate in going a general statement with out dates and say that after so long a time you cannot give exact dates but remember the general facts...'' Second letter, from Counselor at Law A.M. Legg, is datelined ''Topeka, Kansas Feb 9 1891,'' and reads in part: ''...Please make an affidavit in enclosed blank stating the native and locality of the wound or injury or the name or the nature of the disease for which you claim a pension. Please attend to this at once and send the affidavit to me...'' Tuttle mustered into service on 16 September 1863 and mustered out on 1 March 1864. The 118th Indiana saw action at Blue Springs. First letter measures 7.75'' x 9.75'' and runs 4pp. Second letter measures 8.5'' x 11'' and runs a single page. Pinholes and slight separation at folds, otherwise fine condition.
