Indian Wars Native American Tomahawk US Uniform Badge
This unusual relic was sent in 1976 to the Smithsonian Institution for possible identification. Their experts were not able to come up with any answers. So, after decades in the hands of a collector, this item is finally going up for sale. The design is a pair of feather embellished, crossed tomahawks, which are native to North America. It is composed of brass tone metal, with impressed designs and details on front, and four loops on the reverse side. Each tomahawk head is slightly rounded, and concave on the reverse. The size measures 2 1/2 x 3 inches. The surface has normal patina. It is in excellent condition. Its age and origin are unconfirmed, but a military collector we have consulted believes it to be a uniform badge from the Indian Wars, and may date back as early as the 17th century. * This will be a remarkable find for anyone interested in unusual military insignia, and Native Americans in history. * Note: A copy of the letter is included.
