Indian War Era U.S. Springfield Armory Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
This carbine is one of the over 11,000 Spencer carbines altered at the Springfield Armory, circa 1867-1874. As part of the armory alteration, the barrel is sleeved to accept the smaller .50 rimfire caliber with the correct three groove rifling and a swivel device known as the "Stabler cut-off" is located forward of the trigger to allow for use as a single shot. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" (traces remain). It has the standard ladder type military rear sight, buttstock sling swivel and saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side. Buttstock is stamped with an illegible cartouche.

Very good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina mixed with traces of blue finish in the protected areas with some scattered pin point pitting. The remaining metal surfaces have a balance between silvered out case colors and smooth gray patina mixed with some traces of faint case color patterns. The saddle ring bar mount retains most of the darkened case colors. The wood is excellent with the exception of a hairline crack on the forearm, a minor crack near the buttstock, and some minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
