Indian War Era Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine with Metallic Cartridge Conversion
Sharps New Model 1863 Civil War Carbine converted under Ordnance Department contract by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company to the caliber .50-70 center fire cartridge in 1867. The carbine has the original six-groove barrel and is fitted with the standard Lawrence folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The barrel is marked "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech end and "F" on the left side. The serial number is located on the upper tang. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1848 patent date and the lock is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1852 patent date. The stock has a script "DFC" cartouche and a saddle ring bar.

Condition: Good. The carbine has a smooth brown patina with scattered traces of original blue finish and silver out case colors remaining. There is some light spotting with a some scattered patches of minor pitting (a patch of deeper pitting on the buttplate). The primer box has been removed, with the area buffed. The markings are weak. The buttstock is good. There is some chipping on the fair forearm, a couple hairline cracks, and some scattered minor dings.
