Indian War Era Rebuilt Spencer Model 1860 Civil War Carbine
This is an example of a Spencer Model 1860 Carbine that was manufactured by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company, Boston, Massachusetts. The carbine has the standard sling ring and bar and is fitted with the Stabler magazine cut-off and three groove barrel installed on carbines that were altered for re-issue by Springfield Armory between 1867 and 1874. The receiver was polished during the Springfield alteration and the markings are faint. The serial number, "50402" is stamped on the top of the receiver tang. The Spencer Carbine was the primary carbine issued to the Federal cavalry during the last year of the Civil War. Springfield Armory altered Spencer Carbines remained the primary weapon of the post-Civil War U.S. Cavalry regiments until it was replaced by the Model 1873 Springfield Carbine around 1875.

Good. The carbine has a smooth, deep brown patina on the barrel, receiver and other iron components. The serial number is faint and the receiver markings are illegible. The sling swivel is missing. The bore is excellent. The stock and forearm are good with a short, hairline, crack behind the sling bar and at the end of the receiver tang. The action functions well with exception of the stabler cutoff being a little loose. This is a solid example of a Model 1860 Spencer Civil War carbine altered by Springfield Armory for issue to cavalry units in the frontier west.
