[203]
Stand Watie (1806-1871), was an important leader of the Cherokee Nation as well as a commanding brigadier general for the Confederate States during the Civil War. After the Cherokee Nation, led by Chief John Ross decided to support the Confederacy, Watie organized a regiment of Cavalry. He provided a pivitol role inthe Battle of Pea Ridge. His troops captured a Union artillery position and covered the retreat of the CSA forces. He was eventually given command of two regiments of mounted rifles and three battalions of Cherokee, Seminole and Osage troops. Watie's forces reportedly fought in more battles west of the Mississippi than any other unit and he was also the last CSA general to stand down. A Rare and Important CSA autograph.
