Indian Peace Medals: Rare George III Silver British Indian Peace Medal
c. 1794 George III British Indian Peace Medal in Silver, Choice Extremely Fine, Prooflike. Jamieson-19, Breton-13. 32 mm. Mottled, olive and grey toning near the outer edges. Fine scratches below the tip of George's bust, the rim at 12:00 has a tiny test cut, and overall, this piece has very nice original toning and a natural eye appeal. Melvill Alan Jamieson, writing in his "Medals Awarded to North American Indian Chiefs 1714-1922" related the following information concerning this medal: "A very small silver medal was issued in 1794 for presentation to Indian Chiefs, but very little information regarding it is available. Apparently Governor Simcoe requested the Colonial Office on the 1st of April 1793 to forward out some flags bearing the Arms of Upper Canada for presentation to the Indians and at the same time recalled that the year previously he had asked for two hundred silver medals to be sent out for the Chiefs, bearing the Arms of Upper Canada. As no trace of any such medals can be found, it is probable that this small one dated 1794 may have been substituted and as only very few are known, it is of great rarity." This is the third example we've sold in recent years. In June 2000, we sold an Extremely Fine example with a plain edge for $7,181.50 and in October 2000, we sold an Extremely Fine example with a lettered edge for $6,325. In recent months, Indian Peace Medals have been setting record prices at auction, and we fully expect this piece to garner considerable attention.
