Kakatiyas of Warangal, Prola I (1052-1076 CE), Koma Lenka (feudatory chief), repouse fabric, Gold Punch Marked, Gadyana, 3.68 grams, 33 mm, Nine punches struck deeply on a very thin flan, a Boar facing left with sun and moon above in the centre, 2 x Kannada letter “Shri”, 4 x Lotus, 1 x Kannada legend in two lines “Ko Ma” and 1 x Kannada legend “Len Ka”. About uncirculated, exceedingly rare type as boar facing left is very few known. The Kakatiyas emerged as independent rulers in the late 12th century. Prior to this, they ruled as feudatories of the Chalukyas of Kalyana. But they also had feudatories of their own and these were known as ‘Lenkas’, literally meaning ‘Bodyguards’. We do not know who ‘Koma Lenka’ exactly was, but it is certain that he was one of these feudatories. The fabric of the coin suggests an early date and most likely Koma Lenka ruled under Prola I.
