French India, Porto Novo Type (Meaning New Port), Gold Venkateshwara Pagoda, 3.42 grams, Obv. Lord Tirupathi Balaji is front-facing with all facial features clearly visible, with a decoration around, Rev. Crescent and a dot below on a granulated background. It is assumed that the French incorporated a crescent as the mint mark on their pagodas as a mark of acceptance and respect to the Nawabs of Arcot who had granted them coin minting authority. This practice of using a crescent as a mark was continued by the French even on the silver rupees whose minting authority was obtained by them through a firman granted by Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah in 1736 on a recommendation from Nawab Dost Ali, About Uncirculated with a deep strike and a well-centered impression of the diety, (KM # 50) Exceedingly Rare.
