Marathas of Thanjavur - copper paisa /10-cash, struck in late 17th century, not published in major sources, 11.37g. Obv: crude Farsi inscription Alamgir within a double circular border. Rev: Devanagari legend Shiva, surrounded by small floral decorations within a double circular border.

Very fine, Very rare.

The attribution of the coin to the Marathas is tentative. While it is tempting to associate 'Shiva' of the reverse legend with Shivaji, the obverse legend ostensibly a reference to Aurangzeb, does not readily support such a connection.
