Marathas in Tamilnadu, copper ½ cash (two ruvi) struck in the name of 'Chhatrapati', 1.29g. Obv: Double-headed eagle or Gandabherunda. Rev: Devanagari legend Chhatra/pati in two lines in a dotted circle.

Very fine+, Extremely rare.

Coins with similar Gandabherunda motif but with legends referring to 'Qutb Shah' or 'Utaloor' are also known. Utaloor was a fortress controlling a strategic pass between northern Tamilandu and Thondaimandalam region. It is plausible that the coins were struck either by the Marathas or by a local polygar who acknowledged Maratha suzerainty at Utaloor.
