Maratha Confederacy, silver rupee, Dar al-Sarur Saharanpur mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH 1218/RY 45, with prominent 'St Stephen's Cross' symbol on reverse, not listed in M&W, 10.97g.

Good very fine, Very rare.

Maheshwari & Wiggins list other varieties of AH 1218/RY 45 combination as Maratha, but not this variety. The symbol of St Stephen's Cross on the reverse indicates the possibility that this variety was struck while Saharanpur was under the command of the French General Cullier Perron, who was employed by the Sindhias. Perron relinquished the command and handed over Saharanpur to the British in the 2nd Anglo-Maratha War.
