They don't come much rarer or finer than this! Ancient Greek Bronze Dipper used to dip precious oils, probably by athletes in the gymnasium. Dating to the 5th to 4th centuries B.C., features a sack-shaped vessel held in place by a lion-headed terminal, other end with goose-headed handle and small thumb impression about 1/3 down the rectangular handle. 18-1/4"L x 3"W, in choice condition with a stunning deep-green patina. Interestingly, the patina is very different below where a hand would be placed (indicating it was almost certainly dipped into an oily substance). Ex-private Colorado Collection. For a somewhat similar vessel, see Christie's December 7, 2005, for a Roman example that realized just over $7,000 - that piece is now offered in a Swiss Gallery for 20,000 Swiss Francs (about $15,000). Will be custom-mounted for no extra charge when purchased. Stunningly rare!
