Heath, Laban. HEATH’S GREATLY IMPROVED AND ENLARGED INFALLIBLE GOVERNMENT COUNTERFEIT DETECTOR, AT SIGHT... Boston & Washington, D.C.: Published by Laban Heath; Innes and Niles, stereotypers and printers, 1866/1867 (both copyrights present, no date on cover). Banking House and Counting Room Edition. Small 4to, original maroon cloth, lettered in gilt in six lines. 39, (1) pages; finely engraved frontispiece; facsimile Treasury Department letter; Heath bank note facsimile plate; 11 (of 12) finely engraved plates of bank notes and design elements, with original tissue guards, interspersed in the text (lacking Plate 12, comprising an impression of a $100 National Currency counterfeit note printed in green and black ink); 2 plates depicting four Heath magnifying glasses. Plate 5 printed in green ink. Binding very worn and spotted. Contents very good, but shaken. A variant not listed by Newman in his enumeration of these publications in the ANA Centennial Anthology. Most similar to Newman 2-BH-3 (without the Ulrich insert), but the cover does not bear any patent date (unlike all other 2-BH types). Includes the introductions to both the first and second editions. Sadly, this copy lacks the $100 National Currency counterfeit note, which is often found missing from this title (this copy further mocks the reader by having a clear offset impression of the note opposite where it would have originally been between pages 28 and 29). An interesting variant.
