Imported Civil War sword and scabbard in out-of-the-attic uncleaned condition with etched blade and leather scabbard, fancy cast brass mountings and period inscription on throat “Presented to Capt’n J. F. Prince, Jr. by his non-commissioned officers and privates Compy D 24th Reg’t Mass Vols”. The blade of this sword is in fine condition showing no maker’s mark on the hilt; approx. 97% original etched panel scenes remain as does the majority of the original polish to the blade; there is also the legend “Roanoke Island, Feby 8th, 1862, Newbern, March 14th 1862” in a panel etched on the right side of the blade; the guard is fancy cast brass with a cast silver grip and surprisingly simple pommel that is interestingly marked with the Roman numeral XII and the marking IIIII. There is a “US” on the throat mount of the scabbard with all three mounts displaying a heavy dark patina; the leather body of the scabbard is somewhat dry with some scattered cracking and a little bit of flaking; the seam of the leather scabbard is still principally intact. A beautiful untouched presentation sword from an old collection that should be researched. Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
