Important presentation sword with bright gilt and blued blade retaining its original scabbard and inscribed “La Garde Nationale de Moulins, au Gen. Lafayette cienfaiteur da la Liberte.” The blade is blue and guilt shows patriotic French motifs,the word liberty, the rooster, stand of arms and other military motifs. The blade shows most of its bright polish with just some slight staining and aging with 90% plus original blue and gilt remaining. The hilt shows most of its originalgoal gilt just toning slightly with good grip showing all its original wire wrap. The scabbard also is in very good condition showing some normal wear and aging and about 50% to 70% original gold gilt on brass mounts. The engraved presentationis definitely genuine to the period and the blade shows etched panels which read “Garde – National” which is matching to the presentation on the scabbard. The top of the spine of the blade is signed “P. Knecht A’ Solingen” indicating a German imported blade. Lafayette after his service in the American Revolution was a prominent politician and military figure in France until the mid-19th century and it may be possible to research and identify the date of this significant presentation
