Important original letter written by Charles Henry Crane, Assistant Surgeon General to Col. Thomas A. McParlin, Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac. The letter concerns the dynamic and world-changing events of April 1865. The letter is dated April 22nd 1865 and is transcribed as follows: “most kindly to Duane. Mickles & all friends. Most Sincerely Yours / C. H. Crane / Surgeon General’s Office / Washington City, D. C. / April 22nd 1865/ Dear Colonel / Many thanks for your letter dated “Old Stage Road between Farmville and Appomattox C.H. April 10th” - / The news of the Surrender of Lee’s Army, was received with the illuminations, processions, speeches And Congratulations - / Everybody felt that the shell of the Confederacy had been pierced by a mortal wound, and all rejoiced accordingly, at the prospect of a speedy peace and a restored Union, to follow shortly. / The expression was universal “All honor to the noble Army of the Potomac”!! / It would have been too Cruel if any other Army had even assisted in the final defeat and overthrow of Lee’s Rebel Army / and the Capture of Richmond.
